Swell Medical –
Frequently Asked Questions

You’re not supposed to just “know” how this works.

If you’re reading this, you might already be tired, worried, or just trying to hold the rest of your life together.

The last thing you need is more confusion. This page is our way of saying: You’re allowed to have questions. We’ll answer them plainly.

What is Swell Medical?

Swell Medical is a 24/7 online clinic for everyday health needs.

We’re here when you:

  • Feel sick and don’t have the time or energy for a waiting room
  • Need help with weight loss and don’t want to do it alone
  • Are about to run out of medication and you’re nervous about it
  • Need labs and someone to explain what the results actually mean

We’re available in all 50 states plus DC and see patients by chat and video, depending on your state and your situation.

We are cash-pay only. No insurance games. Just clear prices and honest care.

Middle of the night. Early morning. Between shifts. On holidays.

If you’re physically in the United States or DC, you can reach us. We built it that way on purpose—because symptoms don’t wait for office hours, and neither should you have to.

We know money is usually the first thing on your mind. So here it is, up front:

  • $75 – total consultation fee (per visit)
  • $30 – Care Deposit Fee for a chat visit
  • $50 – Care Deposit Fee for a video visit

How it works:

  1. You create an account – free.
  2. You start a screening chat – also free.
  3. If we can safely help you and you choose to move forward, you pay a Care Deposit Fee ($30 chat or $50 video) to hold your visit.
  4. When you complete your consultation, that deposit is applied toward your $75 total. You only pay the rest, if anything.

Medications and labs are separate, handled by the pharmacy or lab.

No subscriptions. No mystery fees “from somewhere in the system.”

A Care Deposit Fee (CDF) is a small part of your visit cost that you pay up front once you say, “Yes, I want a visit.”

  • $30 for chat
  • $50 for video

It exists so that:

  • Your clinician can set aside real time to study your chart and think about you
  • We keep visits available for people who truly plan to show up
  • We can keep the overall visit price fair and sustainable

If you complete a visit, your deposit isn’t extra—it becomes part of your $75 total fee.

You never pay a deposit just to look around or ask what’s possible.

There are times when we believe you shouldn’t be charged. Your Care Deposit Fee may be fully refundable when:

  • You cancel before your clinician starts evaluating your case, or
  • We decide your situation cannot safely be treated online (for example, it really needs inperson or emergency care), or
  • There’s a billing error or duplicate charge

In those moments, you haven’t really gotten a visit—just close to one—and we don’t think you should be paying a visit fee.

The exact steps and timing live in our Refund & Cancellation Policy, but the heart of it is: if we couldn’t properly care for you online or made a mistake, we’ll try to make it right.

Sometimes, yes.

There are cases where your clinician has:

  • Taken your history
  • Reviewed your chart and intake
  • Spent time thinking through your situation

…and then you choose not to move forward with a full consult.

In those situations, we may:

  • Keep a portion of your deposit to honor the time already spent, and
  • Refund the rest

We’ll always follow the rules in our written policy and be as transparent as we can.

Your Care Deposit Fee is usually not refundable when:

  • You complete a consultation (because it becomes part of your $75), or
  • You no-show or cancel very late, after your clinician has already done significant work, or
  • A clinician fully evaluates your case, offers a plan, and you simply choose not to follow it

We know no one likes the word “non-refundable.” We use it carefully, to protect the time and energy clinicians pour into each visit—time that’s hard to see from the outside, but very real.

No.

Swell Medical is 100% cash-pay.

  • We don’t bill insurance.
  • We don’t send surprise claims.

Some people choose to submit receipts or superbills to their insurer or HSA/FSA, where allowed. That’s between them and their plan.

Our lane is simple: you pay us directly for the visit, and we keep the structure honest.

A lot of the things that derail your day but aren’t true emergencies:

  • Cough, cold, flu-like symptoms
  • Sore throat, sinus infections, ear pain
  • Suspected COVID-19 or other mild respiratory infections
  • UTIs and simple bladder infections
  • Rashes, mild skin infections, bug bites, mild allergic reactions
  • Pink eye and minor eye irritation
  • Mild stomach issues: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
  • Mild headaches and migraines without emergency warning signs

If we see any signs that your symptoms might be serious or dangerous, we won’t keep you online just to keep you “in the system.”

We will tell you to go where you’ll be safest—even if that means somewhere else.

No, and we’re honest about that.

Swell is not designed to replace a primary care relationship.

We focus on:

  • Problem-focused urgent care
  • Weight loss support
  • Medication refills for many non-controlled meds
  • Labs linked to those needs

You still deserve:

  • Long-term prevention
  • Ongoing management of chronic conditions
  • Someone who knows you across years, not just visits

We see ourselves as a 24/7 clinic you can lean on, not the only place your care lives.

We know weight is loaded—with history, emotion, shame, and effort you don’t always talk about.

Our job is not to judge that. Our job is to help.

A Swell weight loss journey typically looks like:

  1. Intake: You tell us your story—health history, medications, what you’ve tried, what hasn’t worked.
  2. Conversation: We talk honestly about sleep, stress, movement, food, mood. No lectures, no eye-rolling.
  3. Plan: We lay out your options, including prescription medications when appropriate, and whether we need labs first.
  4. Follow-up: We check in over chat or video, adjust your plan, and keep walking with you as life changes.

We don’t believe in miracle promises.

We do believe in safe, steady, medically grounded support you don’t have to be ashamed to ask for.

We can often prescribe or refill non-controlled medications when it’s safe.

This may include meds for:

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Certain asthma and allergy conditions
  • Other stable, long-term conditions

Sometimes we might say:

  • “We need more information or labs first,” or
  • “It’s time to see an in-person clinician,” because that’s safest

We will always be honest about that.

We do not prescribe controlled substances.

That means no:

  • Opioid pain medications
  • Benzodiazepines (for anxiety or sleep)
  • Stimulant medications commonly used for ADHD

Labs aren’t just numbers. They’re part of your story.

If your clinician believes labs will help:

  • They’ll order appropriate tests
  • Explain where and how to get them drawn
  • Follow up with you to go over the results in plain language
  • Update your medications or care plan as needed

The lab itself bills you separately. We handle the interpretation and next steps, so you’re not alone staring at a report you don’t understand.

Chat visit – deposit $30

  • Everything happens through secure messaging
  • You can respond between calls, kids, or moments of rest
  • Helpful when you don’t have the bandwidth to be “on camera”

Video visit – deposit $50

  • You meet your clinician face-to-face over secure video
  • Useful when a visual exam or more detailed conversation is important

Some states require video for certain care. Others give more flexibility.

We’ll guide you based on:

  • Your state
  • Your symptoms
  • What’s safest for you

Both are real visits with real clinicians who are showing up for you.

It depends a little on what’s happening that day, but here’s the spirit of it:

We try to see you as soon as reasonably possible after your screening chat, taking into account:

  • How many people are in the queue
  • How complex your situation is
  • Whether labs or additional steps are needed

Sometimes it’s quick. Sometimes it takes a bit longer because we’re making sure we understand your case.

You’re never just a number. There’s always a person on the other side of the screen.

Safety is the line we never want to blur.

We use evidence-based guidelines and real-world clinical judgment to decide:

  • What is safe to treat online
  • What should be seen in person
  • What needs emergency attention, right now

If your symptoms or situation are outside what we can safely handle, we will say so. We will not keep you in a virtual visit just to keep you as a “customer.”

Good telehealth knows its limits. We built Swell with that in mind.

Yes.

We use secure technology and follow applicable privacy and security requirements for telehealth. Behind the screens are clinicians and staff who understand how personal this all is.

We treat your information with the kind of care we’d want for our own families.

When you’re ready:

  1. Create a free account.
  2. Start a free screening chat and tell us what’s going on.
  3. If we can help you safely online, you’ll see: • Whether your visit will be chat or video
    • Your Care Deposit Fee ($30 or $50)
    • The $75 total consultation fee and what it includes
  4. You choose whether to move forward.

If you’re not ready, you can close the tab.

If you are ready, we’re here.

If you’ve been carrying something—symptoms, worry, an empty pill bottle, lab results you don’t understand—and part of you keeps thinking:

“I don’t even know where to start…”

You don’t have to have it all figured out before you ask for help.

We’ll take it one clear, honest step at a time.

Are you a SpringsMed patient?

Ready when you are.

If you’re sick, worried, or just ready to finally take a step for yourself, we’re here.
