About Dr. Laura Purdy

The Doctor Who Wanted Healthcare to Feel Human Again

Before Swell Medical was a website or a service, it was a feeling I could not ignore:

“This should be easier. People are trying so hard just to be okay.”

I’m Dr. Laura Purdy, MD, MBA. I’m a family physician, a mom, a founder, and someone who has spent a lot of nights thinking about people I couldn’t stop worrying about after the visit ended.

I didn’t build Swell because I wanted another project.

I built it because I kept seeing the same thing over and over again: good people, doing their best, running into a healthcare system that felt like a maze.

The Real Story:
Why I Started Caring About This So Much

Long before telehealth, there was a very ordinary version of this story:

  • A parent holding a sick child, staring at the clock, trying to decide if they can miss work tomorrow.
  • A person sitting in their car outside urgent care, exhausted, talking themselves into going in.
  • Someone staring at an empty pill bottle, knowing they’re out of refills and already feeling like they’ve failed.

I was the doctor on the other side of that door.

I watched people apologize for being there. I watched them say, “I’m sorry, I know you’re busy,” when they were the ones who were sick and scared.

Then telehealth started to grow, and for the first time, I saw a real crack of light:

  • What if that parent could reach us from their couch?
  • What if that refill didn’t require a half-day off work?
  • What if a UTI at midnight didn’t mean choosing between pain and a fluorescent waiting room?

I started working in virtual care and I fell in love with what it could be when it’s done carefully and well.

Not a shortcut.
Not a gimmick.
Just another way for real people to get real care.

Swell Medical is one of the first places where I took everything I’d learned and said:

“Let’s build a clinic that lives where people actually live—in the in-between moments, on the couch, between shifts, after bedtime.”

I wanted Swell to feel like this:

Low drama, high safety.

Not fancy, just deeply reliable.

Not a “disruptor,” just a clinic that shows up.

So we made some simple, deliberate choices:

  • 24/7 – because your symptoms don’t care what time it is.
  • All 50 states + DC – so your care can go where you go.
  • Chat and video visits – so you can pick what fits your life and your state’s rules.
  • Cash-pay only, clear prices – $30 for chat visits, $50 for video visits, sign-up and initial screening chat free.
  • No controlled substances – because safety matters more than shortcuts.

I didn’t want people to have to guess:

  • “Can they help me?”
  • “What will this cost?”
  • “Am I bothering them?”

I wanted it to be spelled out, kindly and clearly.

A Clinic For Real Life

A Clinic For Real Life

The Doctor
Behind the Screen

Here is what I carry into every visit, even if I’m not the clinician you see that day:

  • I know what it feels like to be the patient who doesn’t have time, money, or flexibility to go sit in a waiting room.}
  • I know what it feels like to be the doctor who wishes they could do more, sooner, faster, for someone who is struggling.
  • I’ve seen what happens when systems are built without thinking about the humans who have to live inside them.

Swell is my answer to that.

It’s not perfect. No clinic is. But it is honest.

And it is built on some very clear promises:

We will tell you the truth.

If we can’t safely treat you online, we will say that. Clearly. Kindly. Every time.

We will protect your safety first.

Convenience never comes before clinical judgment. If something feels like an emergency, we will send you where you need to go.

We will respect your life.

We know you are juggling kids, jobs, bills, and a thousand emotional tabs open in your brain.

We want your visit with us to be one of the easier, kinder parts of your day.

We will see you as a person.

Not a case. Not a problem to move off a screen. A human being who is allowed to need help.

The Foundation Layer of My Work

Over time, I’ve gone on to build and support many other brands and projects. Some focus on clinicians. Some focus on new ways of structuring care. Some carry a lot more “sparkle.”

But Swell Medical is the foundation layer.

It’s the proof that:

  • You can run a nationwide telehealth clinic.
  • You can keep things safe and simple.
  • You can treat people like humans and still be efficient.
  • You can make space for both schedules and feelings in the care journey.

When I look at Swell, I don’t just see a website.

I see thousands of quiet moments where someone chose to reach out instead of waiting it out.

That matters to me.

What You Can Expect From a Swell Visit

When you come to Swell, you are stepping into a system I helped design on purpose:

  • You start with a free screening chat where you explain what’s going on.
  • You find out if we can safely help you online.
  • You see exactly what kind of visit you’re having and what it will cost.
  • You talk with a clinician who is trained to balance safety, empathy, and real-world reality.
  • You get a plan, a prescription, or a next step that makes sense.

And behind all of that, there’s me—a doctor who still believes that healthcare can be:

  • Kinder than what most people are used to.
  • Clearer than the paperwork and jargon suggest.
  • Closer to your real life than a waiting room chair.

If something has been nagging at you—a symptom, a refill problem, your weight, your labs—and you’ve been putting it off because it just feels too hard to deal with:

Swell exists for that moment.

It’s the clinic I wanted my own patients, my own friends, my own family to have access to when everything else felt too heavy.

Are you a SpringsMed patient?
